60年代には、モントレー・ポップ・フェスティバルやウッドストック・フェスティバルにも参加、ロックやジャズ等のポピュラーミュージックにも影響を与える。

ジョージ・ハリスンのシタールのシタールの師。

サタジット・レイの監督作品や『まごころを君に』（『アルジャーノンに花束を』の映画版）、『ガンジー』など多くの映画音楽も手掛けた。

娘にシタール奏者のアヌーシュカ・シャンカル、ジャズ歌手のノラ・ジョーンズ。
