日本の作曲家。
戦後のクラシック音楽、現代音楽界を代表する音楽家の一人。
仏教音楽、声明を模した男声合唱を取り入れた「涅槃交響曲」が代表作。 多くの映画音楽や日本テレビのスポーツ番組のテーマ曲である「スポーツ行進曲」などを手がけた。
テレビ番組「題名のない音楽会」の元司会者としても有名。
