アメリカのジャズ・トランペット奏者。ビバップを代表するトランペッターの一人。
40年代半ばからディジー・ガレスピーやビリー・エクスタインのビッグバンドに参加。その後チャーリー・パーカーのクインテットとも。54年より、アート・ブレイキーのジャズ・メッセンジャーの創設メンバー。
「いぶし銀の～」などと評されることが多く、目立ったセールスなどはなかったが、中音域の安定したプレイで知られる。
