アメリカのテナーサックス、クラリネット奏者。「モダンジャズの開祖」とも言われる。

キャリア初期、 カウント・ベイシー楽団への参加で注目される。当時、テナーサックス奏者としてスターだったコールマン・ホーキンスの激しい演奏に比べるとソフトな演奏スタイルで、リズムもゆるいのが特徴。

同じくカウント・ベイシー楽団に参加していた黒人女性歌手、ビリー・ホリデイとも懇意にしており「プレズ」（テナーサックス奏者のプレジデントの意）の愛称で呼ばれていた。
