日本の歌謡曲歌手。
戦後の代表的歌手の一人。通称「エレジー（悲歌）の女王」。非常に個性的なビブラート唱法が特徴。
映画とのタイアップで『江の島悲歌』がヒット、続編的『エレジーもの』が量産される。それが飽きられてきた頃、作曲家である実父のペンによる、明るいイメージチェンジ曲『月がとっても青いから』を発表、国民的大ヒット。
