68年の渡米以降、「マイルス・デイヴィス・グループ」「リターン・トゥ・フォーエヴァー」「ウェザー・リポート」と70年代を代表するグループで活躍。ミルトン・ナシメントの米国進出など、ブラジルと米国の橋渡し的役割も担った。
妻であるフローラ・プリムとのユニット、「フォース・ワールド」としての活動も。
